At our cosmetic skin care clinic in Windsor, we offer Dermapen, an advanced microneedling treatment that can address a wide range of skin concerns. It’s a non-surgical procedure that tightens and rejuvenates the skin, with fast results and few side effects. Here’s a look at what is involved, and three common skin complaints it can help with.
How does Dermapen work?
Dermapen involves using a small hand-held device to deliver over a thousand tiny needle punctures to the skin, which stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. These are the proteins that help to keep our skin looking smooth and youthful, and the body produces less of them as we age.
Acne scars
Severe acne can leave scars on the skin, even after the acne has cleared up. The uneven skin surface can be difficult to disguise even with heavy makeup, and it can cause psychological distress. People with acne scars can be more vulnerable to low self esteem, anxiety and depression.
Dermapen treatment will stimulate the skin’s natural healing mechanisms, promoting renewed healing and helping to smooth out the appearance of acne scars. Shallower scars may become completely invisible, while the appearance of deeper scars can be smoothed and significantly diminished, particularly if repeat treatments are applied.
On average, most scarring will be improved after four to eight treatments, given at intervals of six to eight weeks, and the results will be long lasting.
Stretch marks
Stretch marks are long rippled marks that appear on the body when the skin has been overstretched, such as during rapid growth spurts, pregnancy, or weight gain. They can cause an individual to feel self-conscious and may restrict the type of clothing they wear.
Dermapen treatment applies a scientific approach called Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), which delivers a controlled needle depth to activate the fibroblast and induce production of collagen and elastin. This visibly smooths out the scar tissue and reduces the discolouration of the damaged skin, so that it is much closer in appearance to the surrounding healthy skin.
Fine lines and wrinkles
Collagen levels deplete as we get older, and this can lead to fine lines and wrinkles developing around the eyes, mouth, cheeks and forehead. This can cause an individual to look tired and older than their biological age. Dermapen treatment can produce a smoother and more youthful looking complexion by promoting collagen synthesis.
This stimulates the skin’s natural rejuvenation mechanisms, and over a course of treatments the skin will become thicker and more even in texture. This reduces the depth of the wrinkles and may completely erase the signs of fine lines.
Common questions about Dermapen
If you have never had a microneedling treatment before, it is likely that you have a few questions. Here are the answers to common queries.
How quickly are the results visible?
Most people will notice a visible improvement in their skin after just six to eight days following a first treatment. However, it depends on factors such as the severity of the skin condition, the size of the area treated, and the age and general health of the individual. It’s possible to have up to eight treatments per year at intervals of six to eight weeks.
Is the treatment painful?
The treatment is not considered to be painful by the majority of people. A topical anaesthetic will be applied to the relevant area of skin before the treatment to numb any sensation. Minor bleeding may occur, but this is normal and will soon heal.
Are there any side effects?
After the treatment, it is normal to experience stinging, itching, skin tightness, redness, and erythema. These should subside after 24 to 48 hours.
Is the treatment suitable for everyone?
The treatment is not suitable for pregnant women; and people with a history of the following conditions: eczema; rosacea; keratosis; diabetes; blood clotting issues; active infections; immunosuppression; keloid or raised scarring; scars less than six months old; raised moles or warts; and heart or vascular conditions.
