Botox – or botulinum toxin – injections are administered to different areas of the face to address signs of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles, and the procedure is one of the most popular noninvasive cosmetic treatments in the world.
The procedure involves injecting a neurotoxin into specific muscles in the forehead, around the eyes and around the mouth and nose to smooth out wrinkles and help you maintain your beautiful youthful glow for longer.
The active ingredient in Botox is botulinum toxin, a specific type of bacteria. It can be poisonous in high amounts but smaller doses of it can be used effectively to address wrinkles and fine lines on the face. When injected, it blocks certain nerve signals that cause muscles to contract.
These muscles then relax, which reduces the appearance of wrinkles. The effects last for between three to six months, after which the muscles begin to move again and the wrinkles reappear.
The frequency of Botox injections will largely depend on the individual, but typically people go for sessions every three to six months. What you might find, however, is that your muscles train themselves to contract less, so you may be able to go for longer between treatments.
There are some side-effects to be aware of when considering Botox, but these are typically mild and should resolve themselves within a few days. Side-effects will also depend on the area of the face that’s being treated. They include pain, swelling and bruising at the injection site, headache, drooping eyelids, dry eyes, watery eyes, flu-like symptoms and infection at the injection site.
You should notice the effects of Botox from the third or fourth day after your session, but the full results will be apparent within two weeks.
Botox is a minimally invasive procedure so you’ll be able to get back to your regular routine as soon as your treatment session is finished. However, it’s important to look after your skin following your appointment, avoiding putting any undue pressure on the treated areas.
Avoid exercise for at least 24 hours after your session and avoid lying down for the first four hours afterwards to prevent bruising and to stop the substance from spreading.
It can be daunting going for Botox injections for the first time, but rest assured that the procedure is quick and relatively painless. It is normal to experience some discomfort, particularly around the forehead area, but you can ask for topical numbing cream to be applied that can help ease any pain you might feel.
The procedure involves using a fine needle to inject small amounts of Botox into the desired treatment area. Prior to the injections being administered, your clinician will use an infrared light device to locate veins so they can be avoided. You will then be asked to frown and otherwise distort your face as appropriate to help your clinician determine where best to apply the treatment.
Because the process is noninvasive, it is conducted as an outpatient procedure and you will be able to leave as soon as the session is over. You may find that the injection sites are a little red and you may experience very slight bruising, but these should resolve themselves quickly.
