Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?

When it comes to body hair, there are lots of different options available to assist with its removal, whether you decide you want to shave, wax, use depilatory creams, get the tweezers out, opt for electrolysis or even see what benefits laser technology could yield.

Laser hair removal is growing in popularity as a treatment option, but it can be a little offputting for anyone who hasn’t done it before.

One of the biggest worries that we often hear when people come to see us here at Sky Clinic is that it’s going to hurt… but if you’ve ever had a wax before, rest assured that this is far more painful than laser, so that should give you some idea of what to expect from your session.

Do note that laser removal will cause some level of discomfort but you can always use topical numbing creams to help you manage any pain you might feel. It could also be helpful to talk to other people about their experiences and how much discomfort they felt at the time.

Many people report back to us saying that it’s much like having an elastic band being snapped against the skin, something that may sting a little but which is relatively easy to manage.

There are other ways in which you can go about making the overall experience less painful and making sure you stay well hydrated will be key, as will getting a good night’s sleep the night before. Avoid drinking alcohol the night before your treatment as well, since dehydration can increase your sensitivity to pain.

Interestingly, you may also find that your menstrual cycle has an impact on how painful the treatment is.

Research suggests that pain may be felt more keenly in the menstrual and premenstrual phases, rather than in the mid-menstrual and ovulatory phases, so getting to know your cycle and booking your treatment session in line with this could help you feel more comfortable during the procedure.

You may also find that some areas of the body are inherently more painful than others when you go for laser removal. Areas with thinner skin are typically more sensitive, such as the back, bikini line, underarms and the upper lip area. The cheeks, stomach and legs, meanwhile, may be less sensitive to pain.

What you are likely to find, however, is that the benefits of this kind of hair removal procedure outweigh any pain you may experience at the time. Advantages of laser include thinner hair regrowth, smoother skin and fewer ingrown hairs.

It’s also a long-term solution, so you won’t have to worry about grooming as much as you might do if you were to opt for another hair removal option. If you’d like to find out more about the procedure and what’s involved, get in touch with us today to book an appointment at our laser hair removal clinic.
